Qatar Rail launched in 2011 to oversee the construction and later management of an advanced and efficient railway system that connects the various cities in the country and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) at large in the future. The project is divided into three major lines namely:

Doha Metro:

This is a developed, comfortable and easily accessible railway network that aims to connect the capital with its suburbs. The metro system will be built in two phases:
  • The first will see the construction of three of four lines: Red, Gold and Green with 37 stations. These lines will be open by 2020.
  • The second phase will see the construction of an additional line – blue – as well as an expansion to the networks from phase one with an additional 60 stations by 2026.

In addition to the services, Doha Metro will reflect the heritage of the country with designs inspired by traditional Bedouin tents.

Lusail Tram:

Lusail Tram will provide a developed and environmentally friendly transportation network within its environs. It will be connected to the capital through the Doha Metro. The Lusail tram extends over 19 km to include:

  • Four lines
  • 25 stations
  • One bridge that accommodates passengers with connections to the regional railway
  • One Lusail Tram depot and operation, maintenance and storage facility and test track that utilizes state-of-the-art services.
Long Distance Rail:

This line will not only connect with other cities in Qatar but is part of a planned regional rail network in the GCC states. This line will link major cities in Qatar, the new port and Hamad International Airport with residential centers in the rest of the GCC countries.

The Long Distance Rail network comprises five main lines:

  • Freight line from Mesaieed Port to Ras Laffan
  • Mixed line (passenger and freight) from Doha to Dukhan
  • Mixed line from Doha to Al Shamal
  • Mixed line from Doha to Saudi Arabia
  • High-speed passenger line from Doha to Bahrain
The long distance passenger and freight rail network, which will cover a distance of 350 kilometers, will be executed over four separate phases and completed by 2030. For more information about Qatar Rail, please visit this link.
